Each Fall and Spring, volunteers and their families bring their yard/garden know-how and tools to clean-up and brighten our school's playscape and environment. It's a great way to keep our schools looking nice and to meet other Arbor Heights' parents and students. These events are usually held on a Saturday.
This annual event is fun and a big fundraiser! Held on the night of Open House, volunteer opportunities include helping the PTA Event Coordinator organize and execute the dinner, pre-event shopping, pre-event Spaghetti and ground beef cooking, set-up, clean-up, serving at the event, registration at the event, selling raffle tickets at the event, and more!
During the December Holiday season, our PTA sponsors a Giving Tree for families in need. Gift tags are hung on the tree listing items that these families need or wish for. This volunteer coordinator(s) buys the tree, sets it up, makes and distributes flyers and other communication about the Giving Tree, coordinates the wish list items, makes the gift tags, and collects and distributes the gifts.
This annual event, usually held in June, draws crowds form around the West Seattle community. Outdoor and indoor games, activities, rides, food, prizes, and a dunk tank make this festival a true celebration of Spring. Volunteer opportunities include ticket sales, set-up, clean-up, food sales, ride and game facilitators, grillers, cotton candy makers, and more! A lead coordinator (or two) is needed to organize the event, plus many volunteers
Everyone loves Bingo! Volunteers for this event help with set-up, clean-up, coordinating the ordering of food and food delivery, serving, procuring items for winning Bingo card-players, and more.

Young Author’s Day
Young Authors Day is an Arbor Heights tradition that takes place in the spring. All students (K-5) write their own literary works of art that are published into individual books. On this special day each student has a chance to share his or her book with other students, parents, teachers, and members of the community. a special T-shirt is designed by the students each year for a fun autographing party later in the day.
Each Spring, volunteers organize appreciation activities during Teacher Appreciation Week, along with hosting a special lunch to honor our wonderful teachers and staff.
The inaugural auction (2009) and 2nd Annual Auction (2010) were both a smashing success! Volunteer opportunities include pre-event coordination with the PTA Auction coordinator, helping with set-up at the event, greeters, check-in volunteers, helping with raffle tickets, helping with special booths like the wine ring toss, dessert dash recorders, direct drive recorders, selling drink tickets, runners, and more.
Hear stories, buy books and help the school raise funds from a portion of the proceeds! The Westwood Village Barnes & Noble store has graciously partnered with our school for the last few years to host a special night in their store. It's especially fun because the kids can wear their pajamas!
Direct donations provide valuable additional funds for our school. The volunteer coordinator for this program promotes the drive, makes and distributes the flyers, organizes the time-frame, and collects and monitors the donations.
eScrip is proven to be a fantastic resource for fundraising. Our community partner, Safeway, contributes a percentage of your grocery loyalty cards, credit card, and debit/ATM card purchases to the school. We need a lead volunteer and one or two assistants to manage this program, coordinate with Safeway as needed, and work with Mr. Wilkie and the PTA board member to facilitate transactions. These volunteers also promote to and educate parents about this wonderful source of school funds.
Volunteers are often the driving force in a Box Tops for Education program. They let parents know about the program, how it works and how much their school earned. They run collection contests, work with school staff and teachers and show everyone how valuable Box Tops are for the school. Coordinators collect, organize and mail in all the Box Tops submitted by school supporters—and watch everybody smile when a big check comes in return.
New volunteer positions this year! Grade parents will be extremely helpful for several school-wide programs. Each grade will need at least 3 - 4 parents/helpers, who can then recruit others as needed. Each grade will be responsible for four activities throughout the year: 1) a bake sale (Spaghetti Dinner/Open House - 4th grade; Winter Concert - ALL GRADES; Bingo Night - Kindergarten; Literacy Night - 2nd grade; Math Night - 3rd grade; Book Fair - 5th grade; and Spring Concert - 1st grade), 2) working with the Fall Auction Committee on a grade-wide project, 3) helping with 1-2 Popcorn Fridays, and 4) helping their grade with teacher/staff appreciation in the Spring. *Grade parents are not specific room parents. If desired, teachers will assign and work with room parents directly.
Office volunteers help the office staff with many necessary administrative duties such as filing, sorting and distributing materials. We really need help at the beginning of the school year with start of school projects. After October please just check in with Tracy for what support is needed.
Help is needed in the lunchroom from 11:45am-12:40pm. Assist students with opening lunch items e.g. milk, yogurt, oranges,
sorting recyclables, compost and trash; wiping tables and cleaning up messes.
Toward the end of each school year, the kids get to let their wiggles out with a fun field day led by Mr. Davis, the school gym teacher, through physical activity stations around the school. Grouped by grade (K-2 and 3-5), the day is divided into two field day periods. In addition to set-up and tear-down, volunteers assist with the activity stations and watch the fun begin and end in giggles.
Our school offers a yearbook at the end of the school year with class pictures and captured memories. Volunteers help take pictures of consideration to include in the yearbook and help assemble and distribute the finished product.

Volunteering makes our school work! Any amount of time is appreciated and needed. Many tasks can be done at home, or are one-time events requiring just a couple of hours of your valuable time. Feel free to buddy up and split a job with someone you enjoy, or ask for a job share and we'll match you with someone who is interested in sharing a job with you.
